Did you know that spirit bears are black bears that have a rare genetic trait that causes their coat colour to be white instead of black?
A spirit bear, also known as a Kermode bear, is a subspecies of the American black bear. Both black or white Kermode bears can carry the 'spirit bear' gene which means two black bears can produce a white cub. However, this also means having a white Kermode parent does not automatically mean their cubs will be Kermode bears as it depends on whether or not the other parent is also carrying the 'spirit bear' gene as well.
